Technology Working Group Workshop: Prioritisation of Technical Challenges
7 June 2019
11 am (Brussels, Berlin, Paris)
10 am (London, Dublin, Lisbon)
Presenter: Charlotte Cochrane, University of Edinburgh
The first workshop of the Technology Working Group focused on identifying the key technology development areas of the ocean energy sector. During this workshop, an initial list of technology challenges was presented. Based on the comments of the Technology Working Group, the list will be prioritised to determine the technology priority areas that will serve as input for the work to update the ‘Strategic Research Agenda’ for ocean energy. The list will also determine the topics of the next webinars and workshops.

After the presentation, the TWG members were invited to comment and ask questions. The questions were related to both the methodology used to create the list and to the content itself. The methodology-related questions focused on the weighing of the scores and the parties who performed the scoring.
A few concerns were raised about the lack of diversity in the scores and the possible need to further prioritisation. The presenters explained that the challenges have all undergone prioritisation in the authorship of the source material and any low priority challenges have already been eliminated at an earlier stage. The consistent scoring in this exercise therefore demonstrates that the source material is still valid.
The TWG members wanted to know more about the purpose and structure of the SRIA. The presenters explained that the SRIA is a description of the challenges that will inform the policy makers at regional, national and EU level. It makes sure that funding opportunities address the challenges that most need it. The SRIA also takes into account synergies with other sectors, which was also one of the sub-criteria of the prioritisation exercise. The challenges will be separated for tidal and wave in the SRIA, but cross-cutting topics will be addresses in the future webinars.
A follow-up email was sent to the TWG after the webinar, asking for feedback on the methodology and scoring. Based on the feedback, the list was updated to determine the technology priority areas that will serve as input for the SRIA. The list will also determine the topics of the future webinars and workshops. The next TWG webinar will focus on the structure of the SRIA.
